Budget 2026 is an opportunity to champion the eradication of consistent poverty. This is a goal that has been aspired to since the foundation of the state. We are a much wealthier country now and the only thing that stands in the way is the lack of political will to address it. Nelson Mandela once said, “ Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.” This understanding must be instilled in the whole of society with our public services responding in kind. From the provision of housing, healthcare, education, childcare, services for the elderly, the disabled, Travellers and Roma, to the provision of targeted social protection measures and action on climate change, this approach has to be the foundation of all policy and should be evident in its implementation.

The measures outlined in our submission, if implemented in this way, integrated across all departments would transform Ireland. They are entirely possible and absolutely necessary.
