Poverty Can & Must Be Eliminated!

The number of people in consistent poverty is higher today, than at any time since the Roadmap for Social Inclusion 2020-2025 commenced. Its stated aim was to reduce consistent poverty to 2% or less, but upon its completion that figure now stands at 5% according to the latest Survey on Income & Living conditions (SILC) 2024! Yet the most recent Report Card regarding progress on implementing the Roadmap, states that 58 of the strategy’s 81 targets have been achieved, 19 are in progress and on schedule, with the remaining 4 in progress. How could a strategy which has so clearly failed to meet its overall aim, be assessed as almost fully achieving its commitments? Unless we take stock of this anomaly, and change tack, we risk jeopardising the very real potential that exists to eliminate poverty in Ireland.
